#Microblog Mondays: Lucky Guilt

So, I was one of the lucky 800 people who received a copy of Margaret Atwood's The Testaments from Amazon, early.

I was super excited at first, but then I found out my gain was the result of Amazon breaking the embargo set by the publisher to release 9/10... They released some a full week early.

My gain was the indie bookstores' loss, although I did preorder from Amazon so I can't be too sanctimonious about it. Although I do love supporting my local bookstores, I wanted it delivered to my house.

But I did decide not to read it until tomorrow (but also because Five Dark Fates by Kendare Blake came out the same day and I've been clamoring for that last installment in that series!).

Tomorrow night I'm also going to a streamed live interview with Margaret Atwood at the theater nearby with friends, and that will be the breaking of the Testaments seal.

Would you have waited, or taken advantage of the windfall of a book released too early?

  1. I think I might have done the same as you. I'm pretty disgusted to hear that Amazon broke the embargo, and as a result I'm tempted to actually go and buy a hard copy from our wonderful local indie bookstore, which I haven't done for years! Like you, I can't be too sanctimonious, because I almost exclusively read e-books from my library or ... gulp ... Amazon. But rules are rules!

Can't wait to hear what you think of it.

    1. I just started it! The readings were the first 3 chapters, so I am excited to get into the meat of things. Yeah, rules are rules! Argh, so aggravating.

    1. It was AWESOME! Margaret Atwood is badass. Sharp as a tack, remembers all kinds of crazy stuff from history, and isn't afraid to call out her interviewer. Amazing! She reminds me of my late grandmother. The readings were great, and Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia) was amazing. AMAZING!

  3. I picked up my copy at a local megabookstore today (on sale for $25, plus I got a cool bonus cloth tote bag... it has the book cover on one side and "Under His Eye" on the other, lol). I'm debating whether to dive right in or finish up one of the other two books I have on the go right now first...! So I suppose my answer is I'd be tempted to start reading, but knowing me, I'd probably have another book to finish anyway, lol. I would definitely hold off on any book reviews until after the official release date. Have fun tonight!

    1. I am SO JEALOUS of your tote bag! That is so much better than a guilty early arrival! I started it last night, and am too braindead to do too much tonight, so this weekend is TESTAMENTS WEEKEND. Woo hoo!

  4. I'm not sure I could have restrained myself if I got one of the early copies...but the flip side of that is that I'd feel like I couldn't talk about it/spoil it for others and that's not much fun either. I'm with you on waiting for the Kendare Blake (had classes Monday/Tuesday for work, so I'm excited about getting into it today). Probably will read the Blake first, then get to "The Testaments".

So cool that you're going to the streaming event!

    1. Right? There's that responsibility to others thing! I did finish the Kendare Blake and loved it! Just getting into The Testaments. Can't wait for the weekend to get into it deeply! The streaming event was awesome. I just love that woman. Such a smartypants.

  5. I wish I could read fiction again. Every time I look at your inviting bookshelves, I think of all the joy these pages have brought you (mostly). And then I go home and read some scholarly article like the nerd I am. If I could choose one activity to return to from my childhood, it would be flopping belly-down on the living room floor in front of the fan with my pile of summer books...
