Little Bits of Spring

Thank you, thank you for all the love and support since my awful shaky Saturday (that led to an awful, shaky Sunday). I definitely think that one of the things that contributes to this being a tough time is that spring seems to be on hiatus, and it's really not clear when she's coming back.

I had some beautiful crocuses, squirrel-planted, but the deer ate them this morning (or last night)...can't say I blame them, there's precious little for them to nibble on right now.

In memoriam...

I have some snowdrops that are lasting a real long time, thanks to the cold weather -- they were covered in snow just a few days ago but bounced back and are my favorite resilient spring plant.

A little clump of spring in the sea of brown and gray

But my favorite is this one:

Tough little pansy

See, last year around this time I had a basket of pansies, and it was actually warm out so I was visited by a butterfly during the time when I was healing and putting my goo back together again. It was warm enough to sit out on the front porch/stoop and read in the sunshine, and admire the tiny sea of purple pansies and lace-edged butterfly that came to visit.

Last April. See the butterfly peeking up?

I guess they reseeded, in the cobblestones of our stoop, because this lone pansy is coming up out of the cracks with its beautiful bright promise of spring.

It is a tiny symbol of hope and resilience. Someday the butterflies will be back and I can sit on this porch and feel the sunshine inside and out.

  1. Lovely photos, and captions. I'll admit I laughed at "in memoriam" for the crocuses, though I'm sorry they didn't last. Rest assured, spring and summer are on their way. Summer left us today and is winging its way towards you - in fact, winter hit us by surprise. I had to go and look for winter clothes, and dig out my boots this morning.

    1. Ha! I almost posted a picture of the flippity flapping deer hoof prints in my garden, around the sad little stumps of crocus. Crime scene, that! I hope spring in earnest comes soon, we just had a little ice storm. AN ICE STORM. Luckily now it's just rain, so I can hope it's those April showers (which I guess isn't a saying for you, as April showers don't bring May flowers, they probably bring May snowflakes). It's neat that we can admire each other's seasons as they flip on us. :)

  2. The pic of that pansy, taken from the same angle as your on-the-floor pic from a year ago, is a PERFECT symbol of resilience and hope.

    1. I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF THAT!!! Amazing, it's true--same perspective. Much more hopeful. I hope it survives the icing we got last night... Probably will. Tough bird, that pansy!

    1. Thanks! I can't wait for everything else to take bloom, and to get out in the garden and trim everything up.

  6. You once jumped for joy at seeing pansies, and ended up with an injury. Now the pansies are there to bring you comfort...full-Circle plant juju.

    1. Yeah, pansies and I have a history... This one makes me purely happy though. No need to jump and dislocate a knee! (Stupid pansy injury plagues me to this day)

  8. Love the flowers... my grandma always had pansies in her garden, and the prairie crocus is the official flower of my home province. :) It's supposed to be 15C (almost 60F) by Monday... seems almost too good to be true, but this HAS to end sometime soon, right??
