#Microblog Mondays: A New Family Member

We have a new kitty!

Meet Maebe, our sweet older girl who we adopted May 3rd after meeting her the day before at our local Human Society shelter. She is slowly adjusting to our home -- she's a bit skittish and Lucky seems to be enjoying terrorizing her just a LITTLE too much. They are both 12 years old, but Maebe is more of a sweet old biddy, and Lucky is still a frat boy at heart and wants to haze the crap out of her. She is pretty confident with the bedroom level of the house, and we'll find her in the shower or in our bedroom when she's not in the guest room, which is hers, but she has only come downstairs of her own volition once (and we've sort of forced the issue a few times to try to get her to be a little more comfortable).

Making her way downstairs...
The one time she made it on her own! (So far...)

We were looking to adopt an older cat, more like 5-8, but she just loved on us and we knew we could give her what she needed. Because, she is a bit of a fragile flower... in addition to being 12, which is considered "senior" and not quite "geriatric," she has a low-grade heart murmur and an old left hip injury (although she's super agile), and we found out at her first vet appointment that she has concerningly high blood pressure (so she's on meds like we are, ha ha). Thank goodness it's apparently thyroid and not heart failure, which was a possibility.

Making herself cozy at the vet's

Anyway, welcome Maebe...cross your fingers that she and Lucky learn to be at least peaceable if not buddies soon, and she gets brave enough to explore the rest of the house and hang out on the couch.

Lucky, stalking her like a tree leopard

Playful girl chasing ribbon
I love my new home! (Also, the receiving blanket is perfect for new kitties...)

  1. Awww Congrats!! She is so very pretty!! And I LOVE that you adopted a senior animal...we wanted to do that as well, but ended up with a puppy 2 weeks ago because my household really isn’t conducive to a senior reduce, but that’s my goal for one day...
And I LOVE her name! Are you Arrested Development fans, by chance??

    1. Thank you! She was calling out to us for sure, and we thought why not? We can try and give her the best 5-10 years possible. So sad that a 12 year old cat can find herself in a shelter.

And yes, yes we are! 😉

    1. Isn't she? Thanks! I hope it will just take time. Lucky is very energetic, and I think sometimes he just wants to play. Other times he's definitely being a bit of an asshole. They are coming to more peaceful coexistence, so that's good!

    1. Thanks, she is super cute! She and Lucky are still not loving each other. He's definitely stalking her and she holds her own sometimes but other times runs and hides, which makes it way too much fun for Lucky to stop. :( But, she's been out on the top floor lots, and downstairs once without us bringing her there, and it will just take time.

  6. How lovely! I'm sure she'll settle in. I'm a bit jealous - I love cats, and she looks lovely.

    1. She's getting there... I imagine it takes longer for older cats to adjust, and when you have two older cats adjusting to each other... hoo boy. She is beautiful, and she is sweet, but she is definitely skittish and likes to hide in my cupboard in the bedroom. Hopefully she'll feel more cozy everywhere soon!

  7. Awww! I'm more of a dog person than a cat person (if I had to pick a team, lol ;) -- plus, I have some mild allergies ), but she looks like a sweetie (sorry, Lucky, lol). ;) I'm so glad you were able to give her a home!

    1. Ha! I am definitely more of a cat person than a dog person, but I enjoy dogs quite a bit. She is such a sweetie! They both are, but her coloring is just striking. I hope she adjusts all the way soon, and Lucky stops terrorizing her for fun. She has made the top floor her apartment though, so baby steps?

  8. Awww . . welcome Maebe! She's a lovely lady. Here's hoping she starts to feel comfortable exploring more soon. It must be a tough transition for a Grande Dame such as herself!

    1. Thanks! She is quite the stunning older lady. I love that, Grande Dame! She is DEFINITELY struggling with the transition, and it's taking longer, but I imagine it will be more gradual for a cat her age. Makes a person sad to think of how a 12 year old cat ends up in a shelter. We're glad she's home with us!
